Let's design a fake Perpetual Motion machine
I was thinking about all the fringe-science "Magnet Motors" and found myself reasoning thus: suppose there's a way to power a flywheel by slowly demagnetizing some permanent magnets. Wipe out the magnets' stored energy, and inject it as KE into the flywheel. If possible, this would explain a large number of bizarre PM claims, since every so... more »

Quad LVDS to LVPECL?
Does such a chip exist? I can't find it. MAX9375 or PTN3310 = Single LVDS to LVPECL tb5d1m = Quad LVTTL to LVPECL MC10H352-D = Quad CMOS to PECL sn65lvelt22 = Dual LVTTL to LVPECL MC100EPT622-D (obsolete) = 10-bit LVTTL to single-ended LVPECL and I only want single-ended LVPECL to drive 4 data inputs on a MC100EP142... more »

Earthed PSU question
I`ve been struggling with this for quite some time and hope someone may be able to point out the pros and cons: Imaging a situation where I`m designing a new product and I need to select an external ACàDC switch mode PSU with a very standard barrel connection output. The product is a metal case, with chassis connected... more »

Prototyping Area
I have a demo board with some Prototyping Area. Is there a way to use this effectively without soldering? e.g., are there breadboard like connectors you can add to them(even solder if necessary)?

Bloom Energy Servers
I caught the piece on 60 Minutes about Bloom Energy, and just know watched the videos on the Bloom energy website. They now have many units in the field that are providing power to specific office buildings although I don't see anyone talk about 100% powered by the Bloom energy Servers. These are run from natural gas as well as... more »

uP/uC Floating Pins?
When a uP or uC is exercising its POR cycle, what are the states of the output pins? Floating, or held low, or what? Particularly if it's recovering from a brown-out that caused POR to be exerted. ...Jim Thompson

OT: Olympics Controversy
I heard that skiier Lindsey Vonn had her gold medal taken away. It seems that Obama is going downhill faster then she was.

San Jose LED Streetlamps
This is continuing from a discussion from an astronomy forum where the "massive" energy savings of 80% were claimed by San Jose for changing from astronomer friendly low pressure sodium SOX lights to white LEDs. Citing the following article in the Mr Roadshow column of the Mercury News. But the numbers just do not add up. Anyone care to comment?... more »

Toshiba laptop aggravation
I have three Toshiba laptops due to ignorant purchases over time. All three have a mousepad in front of the keyboard which has an auto-click function - if you tap it with a finger, it moves the focus to the current cursor location. The problem with all three is that during normal 10-finger typing, thumb movement near the pad causes an... more »
